Washwoman's Blues

A performance art/video piece named for an old Bessie Smith tune. A woman, dressed in 40's housewife fashion, walks around and takes white clothing off the audience members. She proceeds to wash the clothing using a washtub and washboard and hangs the garments to dry on a clothesline. The clothing, one piece at a time, begins to become a screen to view a projected video upon. Said video, once realized, is footage of the very same woman washing clothing, but in a laundromat. New technology affronted with old technique. The small, simple things in life revealed and reveled. Bubbles blowing abound.
This footage is from a bandana centric group show in LA 2008. Which is why bandanas are being utilized.
